Mendenhall's Coaching Philosophy

Mendenhall's Coaching Philosophy

I'm a true believer in STUDENT-athlete….you are a student first.  You are a student in the classroom, as well as on the field.  I believe that building character builds legacies.   If you do not take care of business in the classroom, or in your life (social media, in person with others) then you will not see the field….it is that simple.

This year will be about building a strong foundation for the years to come.  We have to make sure that your minds and your bodies are ready for the task ahead.  I will push you outside your comfort zone, I will ask you to trust in yourself, in each other, and in me (and the coaching staff).  You need to understand that the sport you have chosen to play relies on the ENTIRE team to be on the same page.  If you do not put others first, you may find that the whole team will suffer.  This program cannot “win” without EVERY SINGLE PLAYER.

As you get to know me you will find that I mean what I say and say what I mean.  I am all about communication.  If there is ever a question about where you stand or what is happening, please talk to me.

Coach Mendenhall - I grew up in Lodi and played 4-years of HS varsity softball.  I also played travel ball for the Nor Cal Tremors, and was selected for the USA Junior Olympic Softball Team.  I attended UOP on a softball (and academic) scholarship. After college I coached high school softball at Florin High School in Sacramento. I then spent 7 years as the assistant coach at UC Davis. While at Davis I helped lead the team to their first DII National Title. I spent the next 13 years teaching PE in Woodland, and during this time I coached the WHS Varsity softball for 5 years.  While there I helped lead them to their first section championship in school history. I have also been coaching middle school volleyball for the past 13 years. I'm also a teacher at Stonegate Elementary!

Coach Hatz - I am one of the 6-8 PE teachers at Stonegate, as well as the 6-8 Athletic Director. I have taught and coached in the district for the last 20 years. I love all sports, but softball has been a huge part of my life for the last 47 years. I hope to be able share some of the knowledge I have stored upstairs over those years. Like Coach Mendenhall, I have coached at the high school and college levels. I believe in working hard, having strong fundamentals, and having fun.

Coach Haught - Hello! I'm here to help your girls improve their game, sportsmanship and have some fun. I've coached for 7 years at the middle school level, and 3 years with Elk Grove Girls Softball. I still play ball and still enjoy the heck out of this sport. I'm looking forward to not only getting to know your daughters but watching them grow.
