INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES
In order to graduate from high school, all students in California must successfully complete a course in physical science and a course in life science. Classes at River City High School that fulfill the physical science requirement include: all chemistry courses, earth science, physics, and principles of technology. Classes that fulfill the life science requirement include: all biology courses, physiology, and principles of biomedical sciences.
In addition to the above, students are strongly encouraged to complete the California “a-g” lab science requirements, which facilitate enrollment in the California State University or University of California systems. For the “a-g” requirements, it is highly recommended that students complete a total of three lab science courses (at least one life and at least one physical science). Classes at River City High School that fulfill the “a-g” physical science requirement include: all chemistry courses, physics, and principles of technology. For the life science requirement, approved courses include all biology courses offered at River City. Please bear in mind that earth science, and other science electives, can be used to meet the “a-g” elective requirements, but cannot be used to meet the “a-g” lab science requirements.
All River City High School science classes require students to have the following: pens, pencils, erasers, and a notebook – 9.75 x 7.5-inch, composition, sewn binding, 100-page, similar to this:
Note: The Science Department will have some notebooks available for purchase, but notebooks can often be found for less money at local stores. Notebooks and school supplies are also for sale at the Student Store.
In addition, all chemistry and physics classes require each student to have a scientific calculator. These can be found at local stores, with starting prices of around $10.00. Each physics student will also need to have a ruler and a protractor.
It is recommended that students have the following: highlighters (in multiple colors), colored pencils or markers, glue sticks, transparent tape.
Thank you for enrolling in River City High School. We believe that the Science Department classes offer a solid academic background in science and prepare students for further studies beyond high school.
Please contact the Science Department Chair with any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you!
