  • "C-" or better is required to move to the next sequential math course.
  • In order to get to AP Calculus, most students will need to take two math classes in one year. (Example: Math 2 in fall 10th grade and Math 3 in spring 10th grade)
  • AP Statistics has a prerequisite of "B-" or higher in Math 3.
  • Personal Finance is for Seniors only.

Students are required to earn 30 credits of high school math by passing three different math courses:
  • Graduating classes of 2019 through 2022 are required to pass Integrated Math 1.
  • Starting with freshmen in the school year 2019-2020, students will be required to pass Integrated Math 2.

RCHS Math Info

  • RCHS offers Integrated Math 1, 2, & 3, rather than Algebra 1, Geometry, & Algebra 2. Integrated Math courses teach the same concepts as the old sequence, just in a different order. Math 1 & 2 cover a mix of Algebra 1 & Geometry topics. Math 3 is very similar to Algebra 2.
  • We offer a Bridge to High School Math summer school course for incoming freshmen in order to prepare them for the rigor of high school math.
  • On a 4x4 block schedule, students have opportunities to get to advanced math courses like AP Calculus and/or AP Statistics after beginning in Math 1 as freshmen. Starting in their sophomore year, students can “double-up” in math by taking one math course in the fall and another in the spring. In order to do so, students should ask for this on their course request sheets and discuss these plans with their counselors.

Integrated Math 1

The purpose of Integrated Math 1 is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential functions, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Math 1 uses properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

The focus of Integrated Math 2 is on quadratic expressions, equations, and functions; comparing their characteristics and behavior to those of linear and exponential relationships from Integrated Math 2 as organized into seven critical areas, or units.  The link between probability and data is explored through conditional probability and counting methods, including their use in making and evaluating decisions.  The study of similarity leads to an understanding of right triangle trigonometry and connects to quadratics through Pythagorean relationships.  Students also study circles and conic sections with their quadratic algebraic representations.  Students bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems.  The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Math 3

Prerequisite:  "C-" or better in Integrated Math 2

It is in Integrated Math 3 that students pull together and apply the accumulation of learning that they have from their previous courses, with content grouped into seven critical areas, organized into units.  They apply methods from probability and statistics to draw inferences and conclusions from data.  Students expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions.  The need for extending the set of rational numbers arises and real and complex numbers are introduced so that all quadratic equations can be solved.  They study right triangle trigonometry and extend it to trigonometric functions.  The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Precalc

Precalculus

Grade Level:  11-12
Credits:  10 Math
UC/CSU Approved Course: Math
Prerequisite:  "C-" or better in Integrated Math 3

This is a course for students intending to take college level or AP Calculus.  Content emphasizes on trigonometry, mathematical analysis, probability and statistics, analytic geometry, limits, and an introduction to calculus.

AP Calculus

AP Calculus AB & BC

UC/CSU Approved Course:  Math
Prerequisite:  "C-" or better in Precalculus and instructor approval

For students with a thorough knowledge of college preparatory mathematics, including algebra, axiomatic geometry, trigonometry, and analytic geometry (rectangular and polar coordinates, equations and graphs, lines and cones).  Topics from Calculus include elementary functions and limit, the derivative, anti-derivatives, techniques of integration, and the definite integral.  Graphing calculators will be used regularly.

In this course, students will develop analytical and critical thinking skills as they learn to describe data patterns, plan and conduct studies, explore randomness, make predictions, test hypotheses, and make statistical inferences about populations.  Mathematical prerequisites include procedural fluency in a linear functions and basic probability rules.  More importantly, students should have a high degree of curiosity and cognitive flexibility, as well as a propensity for evidence-based thinking.

AP Statistics

UC/CSU Approved Course:  Math
Prerequisite:  "B-" or better in Integrated Math 3 and instructor approval

Prerequisite:  "D-" or better in Integrated Math II, or concurrent enrollment in Integrated Math II

This course covers a wide range of practical skills using algebra, including topics such as wages, budgets, banking accounts and loans,  compound and simple interest calculation, financing for credit and consumer credit, and vehicle financing options.  Students will learn strategies for critical thinking and problem solving.

TQR

Transition to Quantitative Reasoning

Grade Level:  12
Credits:  10 Math
UC/CSU Approved Course:  Elective
Prerequisite:  "D-" or better in Integrated Math 2, or concurrent enrollment in Integrated Math 2

This class is an option after Math 2 for those that may need a bridge from Math 2 to Math 3. Students will use quantitative reasoning to go further with some Math 2 topics and introduce some Math 3 topics.  This course does give high school math graduation credit, but UC & CSU still require passing Math 3.

QRAT

Quantitative Reasoning with Advanced Mathematical Topics

Grade Level:  12
Credits:  10 Math
UC/CSU Approved Course:  Math
Prerequisite:  "D-" or better in Integrated Math 3
 
This class is an option after Math 3 for those that want a math course other than Precalculus or Statistics.  Students will use quantitative reasoning to deepen their understanding of Math 3 topics and beyond.
