The BIOTECHNOLOGY PATHWAY is a sequence of 4 courses in the Health Science & Medical Technology industry sector.
The PATIENT CARE PATHWAY is a sequence of 3 courses in the Health Science & Medical Technology industry sector.
In all Career Technical Education (CTE) courses you can expect: Rigorous Academics, Technical Mastery, & Professional Skills.
The courses need to be accomplished in succession with a C- or better in the capstone course in order to be considered a pathway completer. Additional participation in the Career Technical Student Organization: Health Occupation Society of America (HOSA) is encouraged. Possible certifications to be earned in the pathway courses: Basic Life Support Certificate from the American Heart Association &/or Emergency Medical Responder Certification.
Students engage in activities like investigating the death of a fictional person to learn content in the context of real-world cases. Students will participate in classes that are extremely hands-on and are full of fun, interactive labs. They examine the structures and interactions of human body systems and explore the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, all while working collaboratively to understand and design solutions to the most pressing health challenges of today and the future. These classes introduce students to the skills and knowledge they will need to pursue many careers in the allied health fields including:
- Nursing
- Medical school
- Respiratory therapist
- Ultrasound tech
- Clinical lab scientist
- Pharmacist, etc.

BIOTECHNOLOGY PATHWAY
Principles of Biomedical Science
Year: 9-11
RCHS Graduation Requirement: Life Science (lab)

PBS is the introductory course to prepare healthcare-minded students for technical training or university degrees. Areas of study include: crime scene forensics, laboratory investigations, clinical (“doctor’s office”) procedures, and genetic inheritance.
Human Body Systems
Year: 9-11
RCHS Graduation Requirement: Life Science (lab)
UC/CSU - D
Prerequisite: Principles of Biomedical Science
HBS students investigate interactions within the human body. Areas of study include: forensic anthropology, neuroscience, exercise physiology, blood transfusion, and dissections.
Medical Interventions - Honors
Year: 10-12
RCHS Graduation Requirement: Life Science (lab)
UC/CSU - D
Prerequisite: Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems
MI Honors students study the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Areas of study include: immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, rehabilitation, and diagnostics.
Biomedical Innovation - Honors
Year: 10-12
RCHS Graduation Requirement: Elective

Prerequisite: Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, and Medical Interventions
BI Honors students design solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century. This course features open-ended problems to address topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering, and public health. Students who complete this course successfully will obtain a Basic Life Support Certificate from the American Heart Association.

Anatomy & Medical Terminology
Year: 10-12 RCHS Graduation Requirement: Life Science UC/CSU - D
Prerequisite: Principles of Biomedical Science
AMT features medical terminology with anatomical systems as a basis. Activities include: studying pathologies, data collection from the human body, dissections and experiments, and performing research for case studies.
Emergency Medical Responders
Year: 11-12
RCHS Graduation Requirement: Elective
Prerequisite: Principles of Biomedical Science and Anatomy & Medical Terminology
Dual Enrollment: Yolo Community College for college credit (final course grade must be ≥80%)
EMR prepares students to work as an Emergency Medical Responder. Areas of study include: administering first aid and CPR, reducing pain, and minimizing the consequence of injury before advanced medical help can take over. Students who are 18 years or older will be qualified to take the NREMT EMR test to obtain EMR certification.
