RIVER CITY YOLO COUNTY CHAMPS!
2022 Mock Trial Team
Once again, all of our rounds - local and state - were online using Zoom due to the pandemic. River City's Mock Trial team beat DaVinci Charter High School of Davis for the Yolo County Championship on March 3 and represented Yolo County in the State Finals. Our defense side defeated  DaVinci's prosecution side, 2-1 on ballots and 51% to 49% on points. Vanessa Onate was voted round MVP for River City.
 
In the local tournament, the team finished with two wins (one for each side, prosecution and defense), and two losses. We defeated Pleasant Grove and Ponderosa, losing to Rio Americano and St. Francis.
 
MVP round winners were Mariana Castro, Vanessa Onate, Cara Mann, and Carlie Pitts. 
In the state finals tournament, we went 1-3, defeating Tioga HS of Toulumne County. We lost to Cal High of Contra Costa, Justin-Siena of Napa, and Middletown of Lake County.
 
Congratulations to all of our team members for competing under extraordinary virtual circumstances. Everyone on the teams should be proud of their improvement and effort. Special thanks to our timer Jasmeen Kaur, our teacher-coach Matt Smith, and attorney-coach Allison Zuvela. After 25 years, this was Mr. O'Connor's final year due to retirement. It was an excellent year to go out as Yolo County Champs.

2021

River City finishes as Yolo County runner-up

In a new Zoom video format due to the coronavirus pandemic, River City's Mock Trial team lost to DaVinci Charter High School of Davis for the Yolo County Championship on Saturday, Feb. 20. Our prosecution side lost to DaVinci's defense team, 3-0 on ballots and 53% to 47% on points. Cara Mann was voted round MVP for River City, winning on all 3 judges' scores for her pretrial argument.
Overall, the team finished with one defense win over Laguna Creek to 4 losses. One prosecution loss was extremely close - a 2-1 split ballot, separated by only 1 point overall, 451-450.
In addition to Cara's championship round MVP, she won an MVP award in the last preliminary round. Other MVP round winners were Darius Canuela, Madelynn Brenenstall, and Elizabeth Rico.

River City Mock Trial represented Yolo County in the Sacramento Regional Mock Trial Tournament February 1-27 at the Gordon B. Schaber Courthouse in downtown Sacramento. For the first time in 20 years, River City won three rounds in the local tournament, finishing #2 overall (by percentage of points scored) after the preliminary rounds. Round MVP awards were given by our opponents to team members Ivy Tillich (twice), Trhemson Desean-Concepcion, and Liam Stack. Individual River City students receiving medals from the tournament judges included Tremson Desean-Concepcion as a top pre-trial attorney, Ivy Tillich as one of the top witnesses, and Taher Rhuma as a top prosecution attorney and team MVP. As the sole Yolo County school in the competition, River City had the option to advance to state competition in Riverside. Instead, we decided to accept an invitation to participate in the inaugural Golden State Mock Trial Tournament held in Sacramento in April.

Trinity Christian C defeated Trinity Christian B for the Tournament Championship. Centennial finished 3rd.
 
The River City Mock Trial team competed in the inaugural Golden State Mock Trial invitational tournament held in Sacramento over the weekend of April 28-30 at the Sacramento County Courthouse in downtown Sacramento and The Hyatt Hotel. The tournament featured an entirely new case (which students had to learn in a matter of a few weeks), and top teams from up and down the state, including many recent state champions. Team members Alexis Villanueva, Olivia Thomas, Hunter Cradit, and Trhemson Desean-Conccepcion received MVP recognition for the competition in each round. Olivia Thomas received the third-highest overall score among witnesses in the entire tournament and was recognized with a tournament Witness Award at the Closing Ceremonies.

River City Mock Trial represented Yolo County in the Sacramento Regional Mock Trial Tournament February 17-29 at the Gordon B. Schaber Courthouse in downtown Sacramento. Both Prosecution and Defense sides won a round against tough competition. Anahi Escobar, Ryan DelaRosa, and Annamaria Rizo (twice) received MVP recognition from their opponents. As the sole Yolo County school in the competition, River City automatically advances to state competition in March.

The River City Mock Trial team competed in the California State Mock Trial Finals over the weekend of March 18-20 at the Sacramento County Courthouse in downtown Sacramento. The team faced tough competition from county champions from Los Angeles (Chaminade HS) and Ventura (Camarillo HS), and narrowly losing to champions from Mendocino (Ft. Bragg HS) and San Diego (Academy/OLP). Despite the four losses, team members Anthony Williams, Ryan Dela Rosa, and Anamaria Rizo (twice) received MVP recognition for the competition in each round. The team performed professionally, improved over the course of the season, and represented River City well. Congratulations to the entire team and our Attorney-coach Allison Zuvela.

2013 MOCK TRIAL STUDENTS WIN MEDALS

Several River City Mock Trial students were recognized at the 2013 regional Mock Trial awards for the Gordon B. Schaber Mock Trial Tournament held Feb.-Mar. 2013. Courtroom artist Rebecca Guan, prosecution attorney Deanna Gallegos, and witnesses Violet Hamlet and Brianna Bivians received medals for their performances. Team coaches selected Joel Kersey and Kate Brenenstall as team captains, Deanna Gallegos and Thomas Monce as Most Valuable attorneys, and Adam Rodgers, Eddie Gonzalez, Violet Hamlet, and Brianna Bivians as Most Valuable witnesses. Congratulations!

2012 TEAM FINISHES BEST STATE TOURNAMENT EVER

The River City Mock Trial team competed as Yolo County Champion in the State Finals tournament in Sacramento and finished with its best season ever with a defense victory over Mono County and a prosecution victory over Madera County. One of our two losses was a razor-close 237-231 loss to Tulare County. River City finished 17th out of 32 schools, our highest ranking ever.

La Reina High School of Ventura County defeated Dos Pueblos High from Santa Barbara to take the state title in Sunday's championship round at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Sacramento. The national Mock Trial Tournament will be held in May in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
