River City Mock Trial has accepted an invitation to participate in the inaugural Golden State Tournament in Sacramento April 28-30. The Golden State Tournament is sponsored by Golden State Mock Trial, a non-profit that was created to promote Mock Trial at a high level throughout the state. The tournament sponsors are among an emerging group of organizations across the country -- including Empire Mock Trial and Standup Mock Trial in southern California -- that create high-level competitions for elite programs. After River City finished 3-1 in our local tournament, GSMT organizers contacted us and offered an invitation to compete. Rather than participating in the CRF State Tournament in Riverside, 12 River City students have committed to learning the new case and rules to prepare for this high-level competition in our own backyard. We're excited, nervous, and energized all at the same time!

The River City Mock Trial team finished local competition Wednesday night with its best record in over 20 years by defeating St. Francis High School in the final preliminary round of the Sacramento County tournament. The defense side's victory gave the team a 3-1 overall record, defeating Laguna Creek High School in a prosecution win and John F. Kennedy High School in a defense opening round. The only loss came to the prosecution side in a narrow margin, losing to Jesuit by .37%.

Students were awarded MVP honors at the end each round. Seniors Liam Stack, Ivy Tillich, Trhemson Desean-Concepcion and Taher Rhuma were recognized with round MVPs.

The team consisted of Ivy Tillich, Alexis Villanueva, Trhemson Desean-Concepcion, Liam Stack, Tatiana Nikolaeva, Andrew Rice, Hal Jourdan, Alexis Tellez, Kalim Salim, Patrick Bibica, Taher Rhuma, Hunter Cradit, Jesus Tellez, and Yulissa Magallanes.

The team had hopes of facing another Yolo County school for the first time in 10 years, but a young Davis High team dropped out of the tournament after the first round. River City remains the default Yolo County champion, and does not advance in the Sacramento County tournament playoff rounds. The Raiders did not enter in the state tournament this year, but have applied to compete in the inaugural Golden State Mock Trial invitational tournament featuring some of the elite teams in the state in Sacramento in April.
