Overview of School Visitation Program

The Detection Canine team comes to River City High multiple times throughout the school year. The visits are random and unannounced. The dogs that visit are student friendly Labrador and Golden Retrievers. The program is designed to keep illegal drugs, abused medication, alcohol, and weapons off of the school campus.

The dogs can find Contraband. Contraband consists of:

  • Illegal Drugs: Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Ecstasy, L.S.D., Heroin.

  • Medication: Prescription: Ritalin, Vicodin, OxyContin. Over-the Counter: Sudafed, Benadryl, Bufferin.

  • Alcoholic Beverages: Beer, Wine, Vodka, Whisky, Everclear, Etc.

  • Gunpowder & Firecrackers. This includes Firearms & Ammunition.

The Dogs Will Sniff:

  • School Lockers.

  • Classrooms: Includes backpacks, purses, desks & classroom areas.

  • Cars: In all school designated student parking areas.

  • Common areas: Restrooms, Gym Changing areas, Library, all other public areas.

  • The Dogs Never Sniff people.

When the dog comes to your classroom you will be asked to:

  • Step outside of the classroom for a few minutes with your teacher.

  • Leave your backpacks, pens, pencils, purses, & jackets in the classroom.

If the dog finds the odor of Contraband (an alert) on a car, locker,  backpack or purse, an inspection will take place. Students are always treated with respect. A student is never considered for any type of discipline unless contraband is actually found.

  • A school Administrator and the Student will be always be present and observe the inspection of the car, locker, backpack, purse or item on which odor was detected.

  • Any Contraband found will be put into a clear plastic bag, sealed, and turned over to the school. The Principal will determine any disciplinary action in accordance with existing school policy.

  • Never bring Illegal Drugs, Alcoholic beverages, Medication, or Firearms to your school. The Detection Canine Team will be visiting on campus to help ensure the safety and security of your learning experience.
